I often get asked to recommend a good protein bar and to be quite honest- that is a hard thing to do! Occasionally I will purchase a store bought bar when I’m in a pinch or unprepared when hunger hits. I am always shocked when I take the time to read the labels. Not only are they typically loaded with ingredients that I can’t even pronounce, but the sugar and fat content always blows me away.
Honestly I wish I had just grabbed a Snickers- it would have at least tasted better! The only grab-and-go bars that I will still buy off of a shelf are the Lara bars or the Elevate Me Energy Bars which can be found at pretty much any grocery store or convenience/gas station.
The best advice I can give is to make your own homemade protein bars! That way you never have to worry what ingredients are in them or spend the cash on expensive store bought options. Here is an easy to make, chocolatey-goodness, protein bar recipe that is a favourite among many of my clients.
Makes 8 bars
Nutritional Value per serving: Calories 132, Fat 2g, 10g protein, 20g carbs
1 cup oat flour*
4 egg whites
2 scoops protein powder (chocolate or vanilla)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp sea salt
2 tbsp raw honey
1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
3 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 cup water
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, mix wet ingredients together.
Combine wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix together.
Grease an 8×8 cake pan and bake 20-30 minutes in oven. Let cool before cutting.
Tip: Store in fridge or wrap individually and freeze for the future
** Oat flour can be bought at most health food stores or in some grocery stores. If you like you can get the same effect by blending dry oats in a food processor until smooth!
